A South Los Angeles high school was on lockdown Tuesday morning due to a shooting report near the campus on the same day authorities vowed to increase patrols near schools.
School police inside Maya Angelou Community High School heard five to six rounds, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The shooting occurred just north of the high school, located a few blocks east of the 110 Freeway, near 52nd Street and Towne Avenue.
Aerial video showed at least eight police patrol vehicles at the intersection. No shooting victims were found and no weapons were recovered, police said.
A shooting also was reported in the area Monday.
The shootings come as authorities planned to increase patrols near schools in response to a surge in violent crimes that have injured children. Los Angeles School Police Department officials distributed an internal document that said all sworn officers should be in full uniform and ready to be deployed in the field until further notice.
The new safety measures were expected to go into effect Tuesday. The extra security measures come after three children were wounded last week while standing at a taco stand in South Los Angeles.
